Beginning with Ariens, their luck in 2018 is going to be sky-high, perhaps at the same elevated levels as our special zodiac of the new year: the scorpio. Uranus, the planet of hardships and struggling, will finally leave Aries after its stay since 2011. The entrance of Uranus since 2011 also explains the political revolutions and numerous rebellions that occurred around the world since then, specifically in the Middle East. Fortuntantely, it will leave in mid may of this year.

Moving on to the Taurusians: this year will be very different for them. They will need to make different decisions from what they are used to, If they remain stubborn, they will lose the things they value in life, and will miss on many great opportunities that will not repeat often. So, they will need to be flexible with their with their decision making, accept new ideas and beliefs, and be cooperative with the multiple changes coming their way.

Next up are the people of Gemini. They are known to have a great personality that is loved by people, and that they always find a way out of any hardships they face. This year will be one of luck and money for them. All of the shallow relationships that they used to have will be gone and replaced with new, fresh, and strong ones. Lastly, they will have a lot more freedom in their decision making and will not be forced to take any actions that they are not fully comfortable with.

The cancerians; on the other hand, will have a Lot of focus on responsibilities that they have to take on. They are known to be  Detail oriented, wise, yet impatient.  Because  Saturn is infront of their horoscope, they will learn how to be very patient in 2018 . They will still want things to happen in according to their own way though, and this will cause pressure for others around them. Cancer women are gonna marry/date famous people…Congratulations?

RU struggling with choosing your classes next semester?

Many first year students are probably now not only considering what classes they want to take next semester, but also considering all of the other ones that they are about to sign up for within the next four years of undergrad as well. Although that could be a bit too much, it is quite often very normal, especially if you are an honors student.

Honors students have to figure out how many colloquiums they should take, what Honors sections/classes they want to sign up for, whether they should take interdisciplinary seminars instead, when they should start their honors thesis, and how to keep track of their SAS core requirements on top of all of that. Although that might seem a bit too much, I am about to inform you of a strategy known as the FUNNEL strategy ( I really want to believe that i came up with that on my own, but I probably didn’t) that made balancing all of my requirements feasible for me.

So, this extremely easy method is all about starting with the most important things first, then working your way down. In my case, that was placing the Honors program requirements in third place, with the SAS core requirements being in first place, my major in second place, and my minor in fourth place. This made the most sense to me because of the classes I personally have to take, but it is different for everyone. I hope you are still following!

Why am I placing the Honors program requirements in the third place? Simply because you do not know where life is going to take you a year or two from now. You might find that your major is really difficult to handle on top of the Honors program, and in that case, you might have to strategize your schedule differently, for example, by taking a class that fulfills both a major and an Honors requirement (there are so many Honors sections offered of classes!). Or you might experience some life-changing event that could delay your graduation date, so you would be better of getting all of the SAS core requirements out of the way first, right?. Of course, I am not saying to delay taking any of the Honors program sections until you are about to graduate. You should definitely take one or two honors requirement courses/sections a year…just do not overdo it.

To conclude, figure out what courses you want to take based on the order provided above, taking into consideration that amount of credits you think you can handle per semester, and the huge possibility that sections could close up very quickly so be ready for backups, and always ask for help from an Honors dean or mentor or any random upperclassman. There is always someone in RU that would love to help.

And congrats on making it half way through you freshman year…almost.

Overcoming my Rutgers fears

How I overcame my three biggest fears about Rutgers University:

1) Getting lost:

I had a big fear as a freshman, and still sometimes do, and that is getting lost within an extremely big crowd, or just simply getting lost…literally.

The first type of getting lost turned out to not be true at all. It is true that Rutgers has over thirty-six thousand students on campus, and that can be a source of worry; however, I found that this specific detail about Rutgers motivates even the most outgoing, social, and leading students to even become more of those traits, and the shy to step out of their comfort zone to be noticed and acknowledged for their hard work and desire to be given opportunities to succeed, which there are plenty of in RU. While that may seem so troublesome, it is the perfect training for the real world. Not everything is easy in the real world, and definitely not either in RU, but we scarlet knights manage just fine.

Getting literally lost; however, has no solution, except for just asking bugging people around you- the same exact people… every day…around the same time- to get to wherever on time. A normal person would definitely use their GPS to get around alright, but I am sure there are people out there, like me, who have no sense of directions whatsoever, right? Or is it just me? …

2) Sleep deprivation/ poor time management:

Everyone’s advice to me the past couple of moths was to kiss my afternoon naps and nine-hour sleep shifts goodbye, because I was about to become a Rutgers student for the next 4 years of my life. Not true. If you write yourself little post it notes with a quick schedule of the things you need to study/get done each day, you would find yourself limited to finish within a certain time frame, and managing to do so successfully as well. Also, if you have a ton of things to do and sleeping in your dorm room or house is not happening any time soon, just take a two-hour nap in the library or anywhere on campus, really, and steal 10 minute mini naps on the bus here and there.

If all fails, STILL take a small nap in the middle of the day, and survive on caffeine, I guess.

3) Getting rejected:

It is ok to get said no to in the face. It really is. I actually discovered that it is kind of productive to get rejected every once in a while. This means that you are challenging yourself, and you won’t always succeed in all the challenges your face…normally. For instance, I applied for 14 positions in research labs. Only two professors replied with a reciprocated interest, and the rest flatly rejected me. Although the chances are that I won’t get any research done this year because of my predicted rejections within a week or two, I have come to strongly believe in the strength of a question or a request, simply because I managed to get an SPN for a course that is really hard to get one in, just because I was persistent in my question and resilient in my attempts. So, don’t ever give up on trying new things, even if the experiences do not always come out as desired.
